Johnny “Bananas” Devenanzio is, by most measures, the single most decorated competitor in the two-decade history of MTV’s The Challenge, a résumé that made him an obvious target the moment he walked into the Season 2 castle of The Traitors.
Bananas built that reputation the hard way, across more seasons of one grueling competition show than almost anyone else has ever survived.
Two Decades on The Challenge
Devenanzio debuted on The Real World: Key West in 2006 and has since competed across more than 20 seasons of The Challenge, amassing a record haul of wins and standing as the franchise’s all-time leading money winner. That combination of longevity and consistent success is unmatched in the show’s history, and it’s exactly the kind of built-in threat level that gets a player targeted early in a game built around trust.
The First Murder Victim of Season 2
Devenanzio played Season 2 of The Traitors as a Faithful, leaning on the same loud, confident, challenge-forward game that had defined his Challenge career for two decades. Original Traitor Dan Gheesling identified him early as too strong a physical and strategic threat to let sit in the game and led the push to make him the Traitors’ very first victim, eliminating him in the season’s opening episode before he ever got a chance to build momentum.
A Podcast and an Ongoing Career
Devenanzio has continued competing on The Challenge well past the point most competitors retire, telling Rolling Stone he has no plans to walk away from the franchise, comparing his relationship to the show to “an emotionally abusive relationship” he keeps coming back to. He also hosts the podcast Death, Taxes, and Bananas, where he breaks down current Challenge seasons with fellow cast alumni, including CT Tamburello, one of the only other competitors in the franchise’s history with a comparable résumé. For a player eliminated in the very first episode of his Traitors run, Devenanzio’s actual body of work remains one of the deepest in reality-competition television.
