The Traitors: New Blood Season 1, Episode 1, “A New Dawn Is Rising,” brings 22 civilian contestants to Alan Cumming’s Scottish castle and secretly makes Joe Vanella and Tomica Adams the season’s first Traitors. The group banks the full $50,000 at a shipwreck mission, but Victor Vollbrechthausen’s rush for a shield makes him an early talking point. By the end of the episode, Joe and Tomica have been told to choose two Accomplices. Under the rules, one will join them as the third Traitor and the other will be murdered.
The episode launches the civilian spin-off covered in our The Traitors: New Blood season guide, with players competing for a prize fund of up to $250,000. NBC aired it on September 17, 2026, as the first half of a two-hour premiere. This recap covers Episode 1 only. The second half of the premiere is covered in our The Traitors: New Blood Episode 2 recap.

What Happened in The Traitors: New Blood Episode 1?
The Contestants Arrive at the Castle
The story begins on a train winding through the Scottish Highlands. On the way, the 22 newcomers start introducing themselves.
Some introductions are already part of the game. Kim Daily, a lawyer, tells the group she is a college basketball coach because she worries that “people think attorneys are dishonest and manipulative.” Fellow lawyer Michael Foote takes the opposite approach and is open about his profession. Kim’s cover story is now a secret she has to maintain for as long as she stays in the castle.
Joe, a funeral director, sets the tone with a joke: “it’s like we’re going to Hogwarts, but everyone wants to murder each other.” Tomica, a Boston-based pilot, names her competitive streak as her reason for playing. Xavier Scruggs, a former MLB player and analyst, expects his experience studying body language and movement to help him read the room.
Others arrive with their own reference points. Kriste Lewis mentions that this is her first train ride. Shane Beatty, a New Yorker, shares Joe’s view that being familiar with confrontation will be useful.
Alan Cumming Explains the Game
At the castle, Cumming lays out the format. The contestants build the prize pot through missions. Meanwhile, the Faithful try to identify and banish the hidden Traitors, who can secretly murder players. He opens the season with the line that gives the episode its title: “A new dawn is rising. But make no mistake, you are not in Kansas anymore.”
The rules come with a new incentive. Every Traitor the Faithful successfully banish adds $15,000 to the pot. That gives the group a direct financial reward for reading people correctly, not just a strategic one.
Joe and Tomica Are Chosen as the First Traitors
Once the players settle in, they sit blindfolded at the Round Table while Cumming selects the Traitors with a touch on the shoulder. He chooses Joe and Tomica.
This is a role-selection ceremony, not a vote. Viewers learn the two Traitors immediately. The other 20 contestants do not.
Cumming also signals that the lineup isn’t complete: “one more will join this cutthroat cabal.” That line sets up the episode’s final twist.
Early Social Positioning Begins
With their roles hidden, the two Traitors take different approaches. Joe is conspicuously talkative and even tells the group, “If you see something, say something.” In a confessional, he admits he sometimes needs to stop talking. Tomica works more quietly, building trust through one-on-one conversations.
Joe’s advice stands out because of what viewers know. A Traitor is openly encouraging everyone to voice their suspicions, which could deflect attention from him or draw it toward him.
Other players begin sizing up the room. Ben McDonnell says he plans to become “the girls’ gay best friend.” Niyyah Hayes, a therapist, notices how quiet Logan Smith is. Logan puts it down to his polite Tennessee manners.
These are first impressions, not alliances. Episode 1 does not establish any confirmed voting bloc.
The Shipwreck Mission Puts the Contestants to the Test
The first mission takes the group to the remains of a shipwreck in a loch, where they search the wreck against a time limit.
The $50,000 on offer is split across two different kinds of task. Three crates worth $10,000 each are hidden around the wreck. The largest single prize, a captain’s safe worth $20,000, can’t simply be found and carried off. The contestants first have to track down the information needed to open it. That setup asks the group to do two things at once: search the wreck for the crates while making sure the safe gets solved before time runs out.
Three shields are hidden in the wreck as well. They add nothing to the pot. Instead, each one protects its holder from being murdered overnight. That puts every player in front of a choice the game will keep repeating: work for the group’s money, or secure your own safety.
The group comes away with everything: all three crates and the contents of the safe, for the maximum $50,000. The episode does not divide the players into teams, so the payout counts as a collective win. It also means the first mission ends with no lost money for anyone to point to.
The shields go to Victor Vollbrechthausen, a business executive; Abby Lee, an astrophysicist; and Madeline Kostopulos, a construction manager. The order in which they claimed them becomes the mission’s real talking point.
Victor’s Shield Grab Creates Suspicion
How the shields were claimed matters as much as who claimed them. Victor heads for a shield immediately instead of first helping with the money, and other players question his priorities.
The other two holders offer a contrast. Abby gets hers later in the mission and remarks that “this game does things to you.” Madeline says she waited and got hers “in an honorable way.”
The mission still paid out in full, so Victor’s decision did not cost the group any money. The issue is perception. In a game built on reading motives, putting personal protection ahead of the shared task gives others a reason to watch him. It is the clearest source of suspicion in Episode 1, although nothing in the episode suggests he sabotaged the mission.
The shield also has limits. It protects Victor from being murdered overnight, not from a future banishment vote.
Joe and Tomica Meet as Traitors
That night, Joe and Tomica are called away separately. Each receives a Traitor’s cloak and recites the Traitor’s Oath before entering the turret. Because the selection happened under blindfolds, the turret is where they come face to face as partners.
Their first reaction is celebration. They commit to seeing the partnership through, promising to “take it to the end.”
The pairing brings two different styles into the turret. Joe has spent the day as one of the most visible people in the castle. Tomica has worked through quieter, individual conversations. Together, they give the Traitors a presence in the middle of group discussion and a separate line of trust-building on the edges of it.
The Accomplice Twist Changes the Game
Cumming then changes their plans. Instead of recruiting a third Traitor directly, Joe and Tomica must choose two contestants as Accomplices-in-training. Over the next 24 hours, those two will face a series of tests. Under the rules, one will join the Traitors and the other will be murdered.
The two then discuss who fits. Joe says he wants someone loyal who won’t “mess up the vibe” or be “too overbearing,” and Tomica agrees as they work through their options. The episode shows them weighing candidates but does not reveal who they chose.
Their criteria say something about how they want to play. Loyalty matters because a new partner who cracks under pressure could expose the original two. The concern about someone “too overbearing” points to a preference for a partner who won’t draw attention. That is a notable standard from Joe, who admitted earlier that he sometimes needs to stop talking.
The twist reshapes the night. Joe and Tomica aren’t simply picking someone to remove from the game. They are auditioning a future partner, and whichever candidate falls short will be eliminated.
Episode 1 Ending Explained
What Happens
The episode closes with the two masked Accomplices meeting in the woods. Their identities are kept from viewers, so Episode 1 ends without confirming who Joe and Tomica chose.
What Viewers Know and the Castle Doesn’t
Viewers know Joe and Tomica are Traitors and that a third Traitor seat is being contested. The rest of the contestants still don’t know who the Traitors are.
Why It Matters
The episode leaves three questions open: who the two Accomplices are, which candidate will survive the test and which will face elimination, and how the result will reshape the Traitors’ partnership. The 24-hour window means those answers arrive quickly. They are covered in our Episode 2 recap.
Who Are the Traitors After Episode 1?
No one was banished or murdered in Episode 1, so all 22 contestants remain in the game.
| Role | Contestants | Status |
|---|---|---|
| Traitor | Joe Vanella, Tomica Adams | Active |
| Third Traitor seat | Undecided | Accomplice test underway |
| Faithful | 20 contestants | Still competing |
| Shield holders | Victor Vollbrechthausen, Abby Lee, Madeline Kostopulos | Protected from murder |
| Eliminated | None | — |
Two contestants have been selected for the Accomplice test, but Episode 1 does not reveal who they are.
What Episode 1 Changes for the Season
The Traitors start with a clear information advantage. The Faithful know hidden Traitors are part of the game. However, they do not know that Joe and Tomica have been selected or that a third Traitor position is being contested.
The pot is off to a strong start. The group holds $50,000 after one mission, out of a possible $250,000. With $15,000 on offer for each Traitor banished, accurate votes will also affect the final prize.
Victor is the first player under visible scrutiny. His shield keeps him safe from murder for now, but the way he claimed it has given other players a reason to watch him closely.
Joe’s visibility cuts both ways. It could help him build trust or draw attention, depending on how the other contestants respond to him.
The eventual first murder is tied to the Accomplice trial. One candidate will earn the third Traitor position, while the other will be eliminated.
