Tara Lipinski won an Olympic gold medal before she could drive, then spent the next three decades turning that childhood victory into one of the most trusted broadcasting partnerships in figure skating. That résumé made her Season 4 run on The Traitors feel like a genuine departure from the analyst’s chair she usually sits in.
Lipinski won the gold medal in women’s figure skating at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics at age 15, becoming the youngest women’s figure skating gold medalist in Olympic history. Decades later, she and broadcast partner Johnny Weir tried a strategy on The Traitors that involved pretending they barely knew each other.
Long before she was analyzing other skaters’ programs on NBC, Lipinski was the one landing the jumps.
An Only Child Who Started on Roller Skates
Lipinski was born June 10, 1982, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the only child of Jack Richard Lipinski, an oil executive and lawyer, and Patricia Lipinski, a secretary. She grew up in New Jersey and actually started on roller skates, winning a national roller-skating age-group title at age nine before moving to the ice at six. By 1993, her family had relocated to Delaware and then Detroit so she could train under coach Richard Callaghan; her mother moved with her while her father visited on weekends, a common sacrifice among families of elite young skaters.
Olympic Gold at 15
Lipinski became the youngest skater to win a world figure skating title in 1997, a year before her Olympic debut. At the 1998 Nagano Games, she won the gold medal in ladies’ singles at 15, edging training partner and rival Michelle Kwan and becoming the youngest individual gold medalist in Winter Olympics history, a record that still stands.
Building NBC’s Signature Skating Duo
Lipinski moved into broadcasting with NBC in 2014, paired with fellow figure skater Johnny Weir starting at the Sochi Olympics, and the two have called every Olympic figure skating competition together since, including the 2026 Milano Cortina Games. Their unscripted, often comedic chemistry made them one of the network’s most recognizable commentary pairings, a partnership Lipinski has described as “kismet.”
Marriage to Todd Kapostasy
Lipinski met television producer Todd Kapostasy at the Sports Emmys in 2015, where she presented him with an award. The two married in Charleston, South Carolina, in June 2017, with Weir serving as Lipinski’s “bridesman.” After a documented struggle with infertility, the couple welcomed daughter Georgie Winter Lipinski Kapostasy in 2023 via surrogate.
Pretending Not to Know Each Other
Going into Season 4, Lipinski and Weir made a deliberate choice to hide how close they actually are, worried that their well-known broadcasting friendship would make them an automatic target for early elimination. “We’re going to go in and we’re going to just pretend like we didn’t know each other,” Lipinski told The New York Times she’d told Weir beforehand. The two relied on subtle signals instead, communicating with what Lipinski called “eye movements” at the Round Table rather than speaking to each other directly. Weir later said the plan worked because, as he put it, “celebrities aren’t our target demo,” and the rest of the cast simply never clocked how close the pair really were.
A Quiet Game That Ran Out of Time
Lipinski played a largely quiet Faithful game for most of the season, and by the time she correctly worked out who the real Traitors were, it was too late in the game to act on the information. In the season’s final stretch, she and Weir made a last push to target Eric Nam and tried to convince Maura Higgins that Rob Rausch, not Nam, was the real mastermind behind the Traitors’ remaining moves. Higgins didn’t budge, staying loyal to Rausch and Nam instead. Lipinski and Weir made it all the way to Episode 11, the finale, before being banished back-to-back, ending both of their runs within the same stretch of eliminations.
Life Now
Lipinski and Weir didn’t appear in person at the Season 4 reunion, but not because they’d distanced themselves from the show. They were in Italy at the time, working as NBC’s commentary team for the 2026 Winter Olympics, and joined the reunion by video call instead. Lipinski has continued her NBC skating commentary work since, a career built on reading performances correctly, even when her own read on The Traitors came just a little too late to matter.
