An Unlikely Route to Acting
Born July 15, 1986, in New Orleans, Abdul-Mateen moved to California as a teenager and grew up with a stutter he overcame in a drama class at UC Berkeley, where he also competed on the track team and earned an architecture degree. He worked as a city planner in San Francisco’s Housing and Development Office before a layoff pushed him to pursue drama seriously. He turned down Harvard’s Institute for Advanced Theater Training and NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts in favor of an MFA at Yale School of Drama.
From Baz Luhrmann to an Emmy Win
Fresh out of Yale, Baz Luhrmann cast him as disco king Cadillac in Netflix’s The Get Down. From there, his career moved fast: Black Manta in Aquaman (2018) and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023), Bobby Seale in The Trial of the Chicago 7 (2020), and a Tony-nominated Broadway debut in Suzan-Lori Parks’ Topdog/Underdog. In between, he won a Primetime Emmy Award for playing Cal Abar/Doctor Manhattan in HBO’s Watchmen (2019), before later taking on Morpheus/Agent Smith in The Matrix Resurrections (2021).
Wonder Man and Marvel’s Emmy Drought
Abdul-Mateen now plays Simon Williams/Wonder Man in Marvel’s Disney+ series Wonder Man, an unconventional buddy comedy that pairs his aspiring-superhero-actor character with Ben Kingsley’s Trevor Slattery as the two navigate Simon’s hidden powers and Hollywood’s attempt to turn his life into a movie. The performance earned him a 2026 Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series, competing against Steve Carell (Rooster), Matthew Rhys (Widow’s Bay), Jason Segel (Shrinking), and Martin Short (Only Murders in the Building), and marked the first acting nomination for a Marvel television project in five years.
